I made this zine as a way of processing the trauma of the first month of Trump Administration 2.0. My original plan for it only included the comparative timelines of the first 100 days of Hitler’s rise to power and the first 30 days of Trump’s second term. I came across the first resistance strategy in the zine, camouflaged publications, incidentally, and some desperate corner of my brain grabbed on with all its might and refused to let go.
I became obsessed with thinking through past resistance media tactics. (Well, I was already well into a dissertation chapter specifically about zines and DIY political media as part of a joyful trans politics, but the mid-20th-century historical obsession was new.) I was spending hours every day reading about the latest anti-trans political measures for my work, and out of some morbid need to cope with being a trans American ex-pat by knowing as much as possible. Returning to this zine and thinking through ways to resist was a balm, a reminder that the world has ended many times before and yet we lived on. We can learn from the strategies that helped us survive and keep fighting before and adapt them to our current situation. This zine is an attempt to do that work by looking to strategies from Nazi-occupied Europe.
